Copilot: The AI-Boosted Assistant in Windows 11

Microsoft has rolled out a significant update for subscribers of the Windows Insider program. This update integrates the chatbot, Copilot, into the operating system. Powered by OpenAI’s GPT, Copilot will be a constant presence, facilitating not only conversations but also making it easier to modify Windows settings.

The Birth of AI in Windows 11

After integrating OpenAI’s generative AI into Bing and Edge a month ago, Microsoft announced that the chatbot would be implanted into Windows 11. The assistant, named Copilot, is now making its first steps with free subscribers to the Windows Insider program. After installing the Build 23493 update, users can activate the Copilot assistant by pressing the Windows and C keys on the keyboard. The Copilot module then appears on the right side of the screen.

Copilot: Your Personal Assistant

The tool will be associated with the user’s Microsoft account. Unlike Cortana, it will be hard to ignore Copilot, as Microsoft has sought to make it omnipresent in the system. Like Bing Chat, the chatbot will offer three conversation styles. Users can choose between modes of simple responses based on verified facts or a more creative ambiance with more originality but also more risk of “hallucinations” for the AI.

Targeted Advertising in Copilot

Copilot will also integrate OpenAI’s Dall-e 2 text-to-image generator, already found in a beefed-up but also bridled version in Bing Image Creator. In the future, Copilot will be able to execute certain commands that would otherwise require technical skills. For example, it can be asked to switch to dark display mode or take a screenshot. Microsoft explained on its blog page that Copilot will gradually be enriched with new features.

Microsoft, not particularly known for philanthropy, will add targeted advertising content to Copilot, similar to Bing, from the launch. With the update integrating the Copilot preview, Microsoft has also evolved the settings page to make it simpler to use and more practical. It also adds native support for other compressed archive formats besides Zip, such as Tar, RAR, 7-Zip, and other more exotic formats.
